The 10th century Lonato Castle (province of Brescia), known in the area as the Rocca (or citadel), stands on a summit on the natural moraine amphitheatre that dominates the southern end of lake Garda on one side and the historical centre of the town, which stretches out to the edge of the Po valley, on the other. The fortification, intended strictly for military and defensive purposes, is one of the most imposing in Lombardy: its irregular layout reveals a structure that is almost 180m long and, for the most part, 45m wide.
Despite domination by the Visconti and Scaligeri families, the entire complex, created with large moraine boulders, has Guelph merlons. It has two bodies on different levels: the upper Rocchetta, which includes the three storeys of the Casa del Capitano, and the so-called quartiere principale (main quarter), below. The Castle is accessed from the south through a gate and drawbridge reached by following the paths and pedestrian walkways in the large gardens that link the Casa del Podestà to the Rocca.
