Description

On the summit of mount Limbara, at 1,300 m above sea level, a 30 minute drive from Tempio Pausania (Sassari), lies the former radio base of the United States Air Force, first used in 1966. The base was abandoned in 1993 with the advent of satellite communications and ceded to the Italian air force. Today the site belongs to Regione Autonoma della Sardegna and is available for use by the Municipality.

A winding road climbs the slope, winding through holm oak woods, to the summit of mount Limbara; after passing through the entrance post, it is easy to walk into the building. Exploring the corridors and rooms is like being catapulted back to the cold war, a setting for many American films, and gives a good sense of how the military technicians stationed there lived and worked when it was active.
