Villa Vigna Contarena is a residence built in the 14th century by the Contarini degli Scrigni family of Venice for use as a hunting lodge and for holidays during the summer and harvest. The villa is located in the center of Este (Padua) facing the walls of Carrara Castle and includes a large garden.
The main building was designed by architect Vincenzo Scamozzi. The complex was later enlarged in various stages; in the 17th century, the secret garden – a special combination of Italian and formal Persian garden – was built by Marco Contarini degli Scrigni on his return from travels in Persia. Persian gardens of this type can still be found in Iran. The reception rooms on the first floor are frescoed.
