The Gola del Furlo State Nature Reserve opened in 2001 and covers about 3,600 hectares of land across the municipalities of Acqualagna, Cagli, Fermignano, Fossombrone and Urbino.
The name Furlo comes from the Latin word forulum (small forum), which was then popularised as forlo and later Furlo. The Romans dug two tunnels into the rock inside the gorge, at the point where passing through this area was most problematic: the larger tunnel is still open to pedestrians and vehicles today (it was completed in 76 C.E. under Emperor Vespasian) while the small tunnel, which is visible from the road but can only be visited with a guide, dates to the early 1st century C.E.
The Reserve is crossed by the Candigliano River which winds between the imposing rock walls of the Gorge, where the fascinating landscape combines with a prodigious wealth and variety of flora and fauna.
