Dall'alto di una fredda torre, debut feature from Francesco Frangipane, tells the story of children (Edoardo Pesce, Vanessa Scalera) who must decide who to let live and who to let die of their parents (Anna Bonaiuto, Giorgio Colangeli), each suffering from a rare disease. Produced by Lucky Red, Rai Cinema, and also starring Elena Radonicich and Massimiliano Benvenuto as doctors, the film was shot in Gubbio (exteriors) and Rome (interiors).
The medieval alleys of the Umbrian village of Gubbio are immediately recognizable. Piazza Giordano Bruno is in the very first frame, with the Bargello fountain (also the fountain of the Madmen) in the foreground. This is where the parents – Michela and Giovanni – live. The exterior of their daughter Elena's (Vanessa Scalera) home is nearby, in via Savelli della Porta. Dominated by Palazzo dei Consoli (now the Civic Museum), piazza Grande, which opens out to provide a viewpoint over the panorama below, provides a backdrop to the story’s most dramatic moments.
The hospital where Antonio and Elena find out about their parents' illness is the Gubbio and Gualdo Tadino Hospital, in largo Unità d'Italia.
Nature scenes, featuring Antonio's horse, were filmed at the Gola del Furlo State Reserve. Locations also included the upper Metauro Valley and the municipalities of Fermignano and Acqualagna in the province of Pesaro-Urbino.
The Paolo Roghi swimming pool, where Elena works as an instructor, is in Monterotondo (Rome).

The normal life of a family – father, mother, two children – is shattered by a terrible discovery: both parents are seriously ill, but only one can be saved. It's up to the children to decide whether to tell them and, above all, who to keep alive. The dramatic situation forces them to confront their past and brings the most ferocious of instincts to the surface.
