In Utero is the 8-episode HBO series created by Margaret Mazzantini (co-author of the series story with Enrico Audenino and Teresa Gelli). Maria Sole Tognazzi is the director, along with Nicola Sorcinelli (last four episodes), and the series’ artistic director.
Set in Barcelona, In Utero tells the stories of Ruggero (Sergio Castellitto), a gynaecologist and founder of the assisted reproduction clinic "Creatividad" and Angelo (Alessio Fiorenza), a young trans man and talented biologist. They are joined by Teresa (Maria Pia Calzone), a brilliant administrator and founder of the clinic with her husband, and Dora (Thony), the new patient assistant. Every day, they tackle the complex human experiences that their patients bring with them along with their medical histories. People of different sexual and romantic orientations, in a relationship or single, whose desire for parenthood brings new perspectives and profound, previously unexplored conflicts. The series delves into a little-explored and profoundly human universe that intertwines stories of hope, patience, courage, and vulnerability. Behind every journey lie difficult choices, biological limitations, profound fears, and unanswered questions.
In addition to Barcelona, where the crew was based for a couple of weeks, the series was filmed almost entirely in Rome (late 2023 - February 2024).
