The four-episode Rai miniseries L'invisibile, directed by Michele Soavi, reconstructs the work of the institutions and the ROS team that brought mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro’s thirty years of evasion to an end on January 16, 2023.

This story unfolds on the streets of Sicily and amidst Roman buildings. Filming in Rome, Palermo, and the surrounding areas took place from May to July 2025.
Director Michele Soavi describes the setting for the story: "A still and enchanted landscape where two seas meet and create a wind. That's what they call Trapani: the city of wind and hospitality. Operation 'Tramonto' begins on this island of soft, fairy-tale colours. The name comes from a poem written by a nine-year-old girl who lost her life along with her family, victims of a mafia attack. This story recounts the meticulous, detailed, and exhausting investigation by the Carabinieri ROS team that led to the capture of public enemy number one: Matteo Messina Denaro."
The production filmed for four weeks in Palermo: in the historic centre, the Foro Italico, via Enrico Albanese, piazza Bellini and Palazzo delle Aquile, via Vittorio Emanuele and the Eurostar Centrale Palace, via Giuseppe D'Alessi, via Sebastiano Bagolino, and via Aloisio Juvara; in addition to the former Theatine Convent (now the Law Faculty, University of Palermo), the Church of San Giuseppe dei Teatini, Cemetery of Santa Maria del Gesù, the Ucciardone prison, and the Zisa Cultural Site.
Another location was Carini, where the home of Messina Denaro's sister was created in a house on via Mattarella in the Villagrazia district.

Colonel Lucio Gambera heads the Carabinieri ROS team tasked with capturing mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro. Gambera has been tracking the fugitive for years, but after repeated failures, he has been given an ultimatum: if Messina Denaro is not caught in three months, Gambera and his team will be replaced. This begins a race against time to track down the fugitive, a mission requiring considerable sacrifice. With just days to go to the deadline, thanks to the team's perseverance, the Colonel finds hidden notes in Messina Denaro's sister's house, with details on his health and the clinic where he is being treated. He organizes a delicate operation, which ultimately results in the arrest of Messina Denaro.
