Rome, 1961 night. A close-up of the sculptures of ponte Sant'Angelo, the ringing of bells, in the background the imposing mass of Castel Sant'Angelo, a mysterious corpse. All in black and white. This is the opening scene of the Netflix series Ripley, about the character who has already inspired several films.
This adaptation is a remake of The Talented Mr Ripley (1999) by Anthony Minghella, starring Matt Damon as the ambiguous protagonist; the 1955 novel on which it is based also inspired Crime in Full Sun (1960) directed by René Clément and starring Alain Delon.
Here Tom Ripley, protagonist of the cycle of novels by Patricia Highsmith, has the face of Andrew Scott. As in previous versions, Ripley was also filmed in various Italian locations.
These include the centre of Rome, a key element in episode 4 entitled, unsurprisingly, La dolce vita. Ripley is in disguise and, in fear of being found, changes accommodation several times. These include a hotel at the top of the steps in via della Cordonata above the famous three-spout fountain featured in I soliti ignoti (Mario Monicelli, 1958). He settles in an apartment in via di Monserrato, in front of the Church of Santa Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli.
He spends a lot of time in piazza di Pietra, reading the papers at the tables of a bar, which is located just steps from piazza della Minerva, which offers a glimpse of the Pantheon. In Trinità dei Monti, he stops to make a phone call to a camorra acquaintance to negotiate a deal. He also goes to the Tiber river and piazza Venezia at night, the Vittoriano illuminated by a large Christmas tree to the tune of Silent Night.
A Cinquecento ride offers the excuse to admire the eternal Fori Imperiali and the Colosseum, and later the parco degli Aquedotti. The police will find a body on the via Appia Antica.
His obsession with Caravaggio takes him to admire the canvases dedicated to St. Matthew in the Contarelli Chapel of the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi (actually the Church of Santa Maria la Nova in Naples) and "David with the head of Goliath" in a reconstruction of Galleria Borghese. Some places were built in the soundstages of Cinecittà studios.
In September 2021, production shot in Anzio (Lazio), on the western stretch of coast in particular, for the scenes set in Sanremo. In episode 3, Ripley stands on the Innocenziano pier, the unfinished concrete arm beneath the Imperial Villa, watching bathers inventing choreographies on the beach: in the background is the Capo d'Anzio lighthouse.
In January 2022 the production shot in Venice for about a month, filling piazza San Marco with a hundred extras in early Sixties period costumes beneath the arches of the Florian café, and using many interiors: in the Nomboli area in San Polo and Campo San Maurizio, San Samuele, the Accademia, Ca' Widmann, the Danieli hotel, the Grand canal, the Frari area, Saint Lucia station.
The series also features the islands of the Campania archipelago, in particular Villa Torricella (Capri), a sumptuous residence overlooking the bay of Marina Grande. The small circular temple with a panoramic view where Ripley talks with Dickie (Johnny Flynn) is part of the villa fictionally located in Atrani. The small village makes a fine show of itself. On his arrival in Italy from New York, Ripley travels the dangerous journey along the hairpin bends of the Amalfi coast overlooking the sea on an old bus which finally reaches destination beneath the monumental Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena Penitente, dominating the gulf of Salerno. Tom's efforts are not over: to reach Dickie Greenleaf, his objective, he has to climb an infinite number of steps at the end of which, however, he can enjoy a priceless view of infinity.
The village of Maiori, the port of Pozzuoli and Naples were also locations. The film was shot in October 2021 in the Neapolitan city, in rione Sanità, between vico Cimitile and via Fonseca, two streets of the historic Stella district; via dei Tribunali, in the section of the porticoes; and the Church of Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco on Vico Fico a Purgatorio, whose hypogeum niches contain the corpses of the so-called “beggarly souls”, burials dating to the plague or cholera. Locations also included: Monteoliveto, piazza Santa Maria la Nova and Capodimonte, between the Capodimonte tondo and corso Amedeo di Savoia. Historic Sanfelice palace, in the heart of the Sanità, becomes a noisy and unwelcoming hotel in Palermo in the series.
The series also features views of Palermo. From the Sanctuary of mount Pellegrino (where Ripley continues his search for the works of Caravaggio) to the historic city centre, the Sicilian capital displays its most famous treasures: the Cathedral, piazza San Francesco, the Quattro Canti, piazza Borsa, the historic Vucciria market, piazza Meli, the Oratory of San Lorenzo. Caravaggio’s "Nativity with Saints Lorenzo and Francis of Assisi" once hung in this church, but the painting was stolen on the night of 17th October 1969 and has never been found. Ripley is able admire it because the series is set before the shocking theft.
