Malamore, directorial debut by Francesca Schirru, tells the story of Mary (Giulia Schiavo), who gets involved in a toxic relationship with Nunzio (Simone Susinna), a criminal married to clan leader Carmela (Antonella Carone). When she meets Giulio (Simon Grechi), the new teacher at her riding school, she finds the strength to end the relationship.
The story takes place in Brindisi and the surrounding province, in particular Carovigno, with scenes in via Alcide De Gasperi (site of Carmela's bar), glimpses of the castle and the ancient village. Locations also included coastal landscapes, with the white houses typical of the village of Torre Santa Sabina in the background; Masseria Caselli, the Specchiolla area (setting for a gunfight), and the rugged cliffs and the intense blue water of this part of the Adriatic Sea (plus Lamaforca, near Ostuni).
The waterfront and the port of Brindisi also feature: the monument to the Italian Sailor is in the background of a scene where Carmela is at a business lunch. Other scenes show corso Garibaldi and the surrounding streets, plus the municipality of Fasano.
From the prison where he is detained and continues to manage his illicit trafficking, Nunzio orders his henchman Michele (Antonio Orlando), Mary's childhood friend, to get the girl in submit. Scenes inside the prison were filmed at the former penitentiary of Francavilla Fontana.
Warned by her friend, Mary refuses to submit to Nunzio's conditions, choosing freedom. She leaves town for a few days going to Rome with Giulio: scenes in the Eternal City alternate moments of intimacy with well-known sites; the park of the Aqueducts, Lungotevere, Castel Sant'Angelo.
Her departure hurts Nunzio's pride, and on his release, he vents his anger; in this corrupt world, the truly subversive elements seem to be love and friendship.
