In Swahili, a language common to many regions of Africa, the word "muti" means "medicine" but it can also signify a form of ritual human sacrifice for some tribes where parts of the body are removed while the victim is still alive in order to prompt the screams of pain that will call the gods. An African serial killer is copying these rituals on commission in America and Europe. Hot on his trail is detective Boyd (Cole Hauser) assisted by an inspector from Rome (Giuseppe Zeno) and an anthropologist of African origin who hides a terrible secret (Morgan Freeman).
A tracking shot over the Colosseum, symbol of Rome, ushers in scenes shot in the Eternal City, continuing into the historic centre which is clearly recognisable thanks to its characteristic cobblestones.
The centre provides the backdrop for a fast night chase between piazza di Spagna and Trinità dei Monti, passing by the pedestrian bridge of via degli Annibaldi (the unmistakeable outline of the Colosseum again in the background) then ponte Sant’Angelo and lungotevere heading towards Castel Sant’Angelo: the bridge itself is the setting for a fight between Randoku (Vernon Davis) and Inspector Mario Lavazzi (Giuseppe Zeno).
The film also shot in the United States, mostly in Mississippi.
