L'altro ispettore is a 6-episode series made for Rai revolving around the character of Domenico "Mimmo" Dodaro, a labour inspector who, as director Paola Randi explains, "doesn't use violence to solve his cases, but kindness, competence, study, intelligence, and empathy".
Recently returned to Lucca, the Tuscan city where he was born and raised, while dealing with the untimely death of his beloved wife Laura, Mimmo is welcomed by his family: mother Carla, sister Lucrezia with her new boyfriend, Dissenso, and Alessandro, the family friend who has found new purpose as a mental coach since becoming wheelchair-bound. He lost the use of his legs years earlier in an accident on a construction site, where Domenico's father also died.
The twelve weeks of filming (October - December 2024), with a crew of over 70, took place almost entirely in and around Lucca. The Tuscan town provided some of the most iconic locations in its historic centre, such as Palazzo Santini, home to the city hall, used for Dodaro's office; piazza dell'Anfiteatro, known for its elliptical shape derived from the ancient Roman amphitheatre on which it was built; and piazza San Martino, with the cathedral.
Other locations include: piazza Cittadella; the Pinelli pastry shop on via Beccheria; the Walls and San Colombano bastion; the corte del Gallo; piazza San Frediano and the Santa Zita café; piazza San Michele with the Turandot bar and Pellegrini pizzeria; piazza Napoleone, overlooked by the Palazzo Ducale; chiasso Barletti, a narrow, dark alleyway created by the city's expansion in the Middle Ages; and piazza San Francesco with its namesake Romanesque church and adjoining convent, which the inspector walks through in the episode about the suspicious death of a Carrara quarryman.
The production chose to use existing locations as much as possible. The first episode is about the death of a young weaver and aspiring dancer in a factory in the Montemurlo area (Prato). The case in episode 3 is set in Viareggio’s Cittadella, dedicated to creativity where papier-mâché artists create the floats for the city's famous Carnival. The fourth episode, a case of homophobia, focuses on the Carrara quarries.
Some filming took place in Rome: locations included Castello della Castelluccia, the Castel di Guido cemetery, and the former Forlanini hospital.
Written by Salvatore De Mola, Andrea Valagussa, Paola Randi, and Emanuela Rizzuto, the series L'altro ispettore is loosely based on the novels by Pasquale Sgrò, who served as a consultant. It is co-produced by Rai Fiction, Anele, and Rai Com.

Labour inspector Domenico “Mimmo” Dodaro is a true legend: an incorruptible, unwavering figure who helped defeat a massive network of gangmasters spanning Calabria and Basilicata. Recently returned to Lucca, the Tuscan city where he was born and raised, while dealing with the untimely death of his beloved wife Laura, he is welcomed by his family: mother Carla, sister Lucrezia and her new boyfriend, Dissenso, and Alessandro, who hosts Mimmo and Mimì at his home. Back in his city, Mimmo tackles and solves a wide range of cases using his infallible method or, as he calls it, his ability to ask the right questions.
