The detective stories starring Giovanni Buonvino were created by Walter Veltroni and centre around a police station located inside Villa Borghese: "an idyllic place, seemingly free of evil, where the contrast between the beauty of the setting and the brutality of the crimes committed creates a fascinating short circuit that allows us to explore the depths of the human soul, where wonder and horror constantly coexist."
"Working in Villa Borghese was an exciting directorial challenge: from the start, I wanted to convey the beauty of this place and the surrounding neighbourhood, to present the variety of vistas, the rich vegetation, the Bioparco, the bodies of water and the works of art, portraying it like an island with an irresistible pull that calls one back”, says director Milena Cocozza.
Giovanni Buonvino (Giorgio Marchesi) has been appointed to lead the police station in Villa Borghese, the green heart of Rome where nothing ever happens. His career was stalled many years earlier by a mistake during a raid, but now it seems that Giovanni finally has a second chance.
With Veronica Viganò (Serena Iansiti), a former colleague now his deputy, the commissioner is immediately faced with a complicated case: a man appears to have taken his own life at the Villa Borghese Lake.
The case in the second episode takes Buonvino and his team to the Bioparco - Rome’s zoo, located inside Villa Borghese - where a naked, headless man has been found in the anaconda tank.
Following Commissioner Buonvino leads to the discovery that Villa Borghese is not simply a beautiful place where nothing ever happens. Now, thanks to the new commissioner, the mysteries hidden amongst the palms, pines, and fir trees are destined to be solved.
The show features other timeless Roman locations: the Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna, the lake in the Parco degli Acquedotti, and the nearby Quadraro neighbourhood that is home to one of the victims Buonvino investigates. The last is a stone's throw from Via dei Trevi 47, location for the exterior of the house where Anna Magnani goes to live in Mamma Roma (Pier Paolo Pasolini, 1962), as the commissioner (a film location buff) reminds his colleague.
Mamma Roma is not the only film reference. Buonvino takes his deputy to lunch at the riverside trattoria "Al Biondo Tevere" on Via Ostiense, location for a scene with Magnani in Bellissima (Luchino Visconti, 1951). He often walks with his deputy in the park of Villa Borghese, and here, on a bench overlooking the fountain of Moses saved from the waters, sit Marcello Mastroianni and Anna Medici in Sunday in August (Luciano Emmer, 1950).

Out of the blue, Giovanni Buonvino is transferred from a dusty station back office to the top job at the Villa Borghese police station. Commissioner Buonvino realizes this isn't a promotion, but a punishment – a cosmic joke, actually, because nothing ever happens in the police station nestled in the vast green heart of Rome. However, he doesn't lose heart and immediately rolls up his sleeves, convinced that this is truly his chance to get back on track. To the surprise of others, and his own, the city park is revealed as both a place immersed in nature and dedicated to recreation, and also a microcosm with its own enigmas and mysteries, with many stories to tell and unspeakable secrets to hide. He is flanked by a team who are not renowned for efficiency nor professionalism, and he finds love.
