Troppo azzurro, debut work by Filippo Barbagallo, is the story of Dario, a 25 year old Roman with an ordinary life: he still lives at home with his parents, hangs out with the same group of friends from high school and still loves the same girl that he dares not approach, spending time in the same old places so that he can catch a glimpse of her.
Rome is the main setting for the film, from its parks to the cycle path along the Tiber river with Castel Sant’Angelo in the background, to the athletics pitch at the foro italico, where Dario takes Lara, his “unattainable” love on their first date.
Outside Rome, the ruined Church of San Bonaventura, in Monterano Antico, is the focus of Dario’s thesis, Cerveteri and Ponza are holiday destinations, and the Ostia shoreline, in particular Kursaal Village with its pool and 10m high diving board, is where Dario makes an important decision.

Twenty-five year old Dario is still hanging on to his adolescent lifestyle: living at home with his parents, hanging out with the same group of friends from high school. One torrid August in Rome he starts spending time with Caterina, who he’s met by chance, and with Lara, the “unattainable” girl he’s always loved: time to choose whether to stay in his comfort zone or finally let go.
