Set in Rome, Il protagonista, Fabrizio Benvenuto's first feature film, tells the story of a dizzying descent to the limit between acting and life, where the line blurs to the point of almost disappearing.
Thirty-year-old Giancarlo Mangiapane (Pierluigi Gigante) has one dream: to become a great actor. As important roles don't come his way, Giancarlo ends up playing roles in his everyday life. His agent then tells him he's got the chance of a lifetime: an audition for the lead role in Clochard, a biopic about the life of Gustavo Noradin, a 1950s tap-dancing champion whose addictions lead to his downfall. When Giancarlo finds out that his housemate is preparing for the same role, a rivalry erupts that begins to obsess him. Under pressure from gruelling rehearsals, a needy mother, and a fearsome casting director, his identification with the character becomes complete, to the point of risking his true identity.
The moody black and white film was shot in four weeks in the spring of 2024, primarily in Rome. Locations included the Six Senses Hotel, Vignanello, and Passo Corese, in the area of Fara Sabina.
Produced by Morena Gentile for MG Production in association with Kobalt Entertainment.
