Based on Federica Angeli’s novel, 40 Secondi by Vincenzo Alfieri, produced by Eagle Pictures, is inspired by the true story of Willy Monteiro Duarte who was killed in Colleferro on September 6, 2020 defending a friend during an argument. The film traces the 24 hours preceding the tragic event: a web of encounters, tensions, and choices that will lead to the irreparable. Despite combining fictional elements with real events, the film has an almost documentary feel, exploring young people, boredom, and provincial life, with the codes, music, and language of twenty-somethings.
"When I read Federica Angeli's book, I had an epiphany. Right from the first pages, she asks a question: How did Willy and his killers begin the day that led to their end? Did they have breakfast, hug their families, go to work, and follow their usual routine?" states the director. "Above all, this is a story about ordinary young people. It's not a story of crime, but of pain. A story of people just like you and me".
The seven-odd weeks of filming took place in and around Rome, mostly in the town of Guidonia Montecelio. Scenes also show the village of Toffia, at the foot of monte degli Elci (province of Rieti), whose highest point is crowned with the Church of Santa Maria Nova in an unmistakable skyline. Part of the story is set in the archaeological park of Cerveteri and Tarquinia and the necropolis where Maurizio (Francesco Gheghi) works.

An argument over a simple misunderstanding escalates into the brutal beating of 21-year-old Willy Monteiro Duarte, which kills him in 40 seconds. Inspired by a true story, the film traces the 24 hours preceding the tragic event, intertwining chance encounters, rivalries, and latent tensions in an exploration of human nature and conditioning through the lens of the banality of evil.
