La Sobrietà was self-produced by Carlo Fenizi with Raffaele Notaro, co-writer of the screenplay, in collaboration with Tejo Film, an independent production and distribution company from Puglia. The film incorporates mythical and decadent scenarios that reference a Euro-Mediterranean imagery. This black comedy, somewhere between mockumentary and grotesque, takes place behind the scenes of filmmaking, exploring the foibles and weaknesses of its protagonists. The focus of the story is a director who makes a documentary to expose the notorious, manipulative teaching method of a well-known acting coach.

Rome is captured in prominent and unmistakable locations such as the Colosseum, Circus Maximus, and Villa Torlonia. Locations in Foggia feature the cemetery, a glimpse of the Gargano peninsula, and the bay of Pugnochiuso. "The locations aren't entirely realistic, both in terms of how they're framed and their structural characteristics, and thus adhere to the film's somewhat absurd genre. Even the simplest locations are enhanced by the framing, which always seeks depth or a particular vanishing point" comments Carlo Fenizi.
The film includes a brief stop in Madrid. "A thread links all these locations" explains Fenizi. "I'm fascinated by places that are anything but neutral, yet possess a sense of symmetry. I am a lover of the grotesque, of everything that is not naturalistic and realist, in a certain sense La sobrietà is a very Baroque film".

Smarting from a professional disappointment, Rodrigo, a director with a hyperbolic imagination, meets Kimba, an enigmatic figure in the cinema industry: acting coach, casting director and the creator of a controversial method that controls those willing to do anything for success with ridiculous and manipulative practices. With the help of Cornelio, a screenwriter victim of the same trap, Rodrigo decides to make a documentary to explore the truth about Kimba’s life and expose the contradictions in the "Kimba Method." As filming progresses, the boundaries between observer and subject, reality and fiction, become more and more blurred. Who is really observing whom?
