We meet Bruno Salviati (Kim Rossi Stuart) in a hospital ward and through a series of flashbacks discover that he is a fairly unsuccessful director who has just separated from his wife, neither she nor his two children are particularly present. There is a glimpse of Rome in the first part of the film while the river Tiber is the star of the cathartic final scene.
Part of the story is set in Livorno which turns out to be a mirror for the characters and their gripping evolution in terms of plot development. Bruno arrives there with his father and children looking for a woman who works in an estate agency in the 18th century neighbourhood, Venezia Nuova, whose name derives from its little bridges, canals and squares reminiscent of the Serenissima. Later they head to the terrazza Mascagni, a square overlooking the sea with a notable white and black chess board paving.
