Maria flees Naples with her daughters Antonia and Carolina to escape her violent, oppressive husband, Iginio, and pursue their dream of becoming singers in Milan. The three women are destined to join the golden and ruthless world of mid-19th century opera, and face deception, betrayal and overwhelming passions. Marked by a mysterious secret that she hides from her daughters, Maria pushes Antonia to success, while rebellious Carolina seems to possess a strength and charisma that no one suspected. Navigating dreams of fame, jealousy and power struggles, they manage to confront the harshness of their chosen world.
Belcanto, a RAI series in 8 episodes, is a story of the fight for freedom which pushes three women to challenge not only their destiny, but also themselves. Maria (Vittoria Puccini) and her daughters, Antonia and Carolina (Caterina Ferioli and Adriana Savarese), are united by their burning passion for music and an even greater desire for revenge. Fleeing Naples to escape the oppression of Maria's violent husband, Iginio (Antonio Gerardi) and pursuing their dream of becoming singers in Milan, they become part of the gilded, but ruthless, world of mid-19th-century opera. Their lives are burdened by a terrible secret conserved by Maria, one that not even Antonia and Carolina know; a secret that could upset their relationship forever.
The series was filmed in about 16 weeks in 2024 (late winter and spring) in Lazio, Campania and Lombardy.
In Lazio, locations included Villa Parisi in Frascati and in Rome: the Accademia dei Lincei, Villa Marco Arcieri, Istituto Nazionale Studio Romani, the Church of St. Bonifacio and St. Alessio, the Church of Santa Sabina, Americo Funari, the Esman quarry, Casale Gaetani in the Appio Claudio neighbourhood and the INAIL building. Nearby Tivoli was the setting for mid-19th-century Naples, especially piazza del Seminario and piazza delle Erbe. Naples is also featured (iazza del Plebiscito).
Locations in Lombardy included: Stezzano, municipality in the Bergamo area, which provided Villa Caroli Zanchi; Brescia (Teatro Grande) and Pavia where the Teatro Fraschini was transformed into Milan’s Teatro Scala, and Strada Nuova was dressed with period windows to return to the 19th century.
Shooting also took place in Piacenza, in piazza Sant'Antonino and the Teatro Municipale.
