Louis Nero’s Milarepa unfolds on a Mediterranean island in a post-apocalyptic world, where nature has subdued technology. In this rural “Nuragic” setting – the timeless landscapes of Sardinia – young Mila (Isabelle Allen) leads a peaceful and simple existence. She lives with her parents and her little sister Peta. Her father Sherab (Bruno Bilotta) is very fond of his daughters, especially Mila. Their life is turned upside down by his sudden death. His cruel siblings deprive the family of their inheritance. Driven by a strong desire for revenge, Mila is persuaded by her mother, Daka (Iazua Larios), to undertake a long journey to learn the Magical Arts, reserved exclusively for men.
With short hair and a boyish appearance, Mila heads off on a dangerous journey that will lead her to Yungutun (Hal Yamanouchi). Locations included ancient places in the surroundings of Cagliari: the necropolis of the Tuvixeddu Park; the crypt of Santa Restituita, a hypogeum beneath the 17th century church; the botanical gardens, where an important part of Mila's training involves the cistern dug into the rock, part of an aqueduct dating to 140 AD, a ficus; the Gennari cave.
The dunes of Porto Pino, in Teulada, provide the ideal location for a desert setting: here Mila's father is murdered.
Mila and Zimoty (Michael Ronda) go into the cave of San Giovanni In Domusnovas. The well of Santa Cristina in the archaeological-nature park of S. Cristina in Paulilatino (Oristano) is the sacred well in the scene where Mila washes in water flowing from above. The park also comprises the Villaggio Cristiano, location for Mila’s family village.
Mila’s family home was built in Torralba (Sassari), also home to the nuraghe Santu Antine, location for the residence of Marpa (Harvey Keitel).
Other locations included Ittireddu and the lake of Bidighinzu in the province of Sassari; and the mine of Montevecchio, between Guspini and Arbus, in the province of Sud Sardegna.
