Porto Pino is located in the municipal territories of Sant’Anna Arresi and Teulada, in south-western Sardinia, along the Sulcis coastline. The area is enhanced, to the east, by the homonymous promontory, covered with oaks, centuries-old junipers, and the rare Aleppo pines. On the opposite side, Mediterranean scrub dominates a landscape made up of pink sandy coves with crystal-clear water, long white and “desert-like” beaches, cliffs with breathtaking seabeds, coastal lagoons inhabited by flamingos, and, inland, forests, vineyards, and caves.
The Porto Pino beach, about 4 km long, is divided into two sections by an old sea intake that once served the lagoons. One part, falling within the municipality of Sant’Anna Arresi, features light grey sand, while the other, set between lagoons and pine forest, is of fine, white sand. A canal crosses the sandy strip and the pine forest in the Sant’Anna Arresi section of the beach, connecting the sea to the lagoon area, which includes the Maestrale, Porto Pino, Corvo, Is Brebeis and Foxi lagoons.
Continuing along the shore, in the part that falls within the municipality of Teulada, lies the spectacular area of the Is Arenas Biancas dunes. These impressive white sand dunes, sculpted by the wind, create an almost surreal landscape that evokes the image of a desert by the sea. Their grandeur and the light reflected off the sand make them an ideal backdrop for visually striking scenes capable of transporting the viewer to another dimension. This area is part of the Military Domain and falls within the Capo Teulada Firing Range: for this reason, it is accessible to the public only during the summer season, in accordance with the temporary opening periods established for the area.
Nearby, still within the territory of Sant’Anna Arresi, in the Porto Pinetto locality, is the so-called spiaggia dei Francesi (“beach of the French”), a crescent-shaped bay of very fine white sand with shells and coral fragments. The shallow seabed reveals waters that shift in colour from emerald green to turquoise and deep blue.
