The Monster of Florence, presented out of competition at Venice Film Festival 82, is a Netflix series focussing on one of the longest and most complex investigations ever conducted in Italy, which is also considered the first, and most violent, case of serial murder in the country. Events took place between 1968 and 1985 and covered a vast area in the province of Florence.
The series, which presents real events with an almost obsessive precision, including in filming and recreating settings, was partly filmed in Lazio: in Testa di Lepre, a hamlet of Fiumicino (Rome); Ronciglione (Viterbo); and parts of the Tuscia region.
Florence was one of the most used locations, in particular the area around via Ghibellina, viale della Giovine Italia, via delle Conce, via dei Conciatori, via del Proconsolo, piazza San Firenze, via dell’Anguillara, via dei Leoni, via dei Gondi, piazza della Signoria, piazzale degli Uffizi, via dei Rustici, via della Torre del Gallo, piazza degli Unganelli, and the Trespiano cemetery. Other locations included Carmignano and Artimino (Prato), San Casciano and Signa. Filming lasted several months.
The investigation into the “Monster of Florence” spanned nearly thirty years of Italian history, continuing until 2000, during which time there were significant changes in fashion, customs, and landscapes, an evolution visible in the series.

Eight double murders. Seventeen years of terror. The same weapon (a 22 calibre Beretta). One of the longest and most complex Italian investigations was into the first, and the most brutal, serial killer in Italy’s history, the Monster of Florence. The story was constructed using proceedings and investigations that are still ongoing. Many potential monsters have come up through time and investigations, and the film explores these individuals from their point of view. Because, the monster could actually be anybody.
