Gradara Castle

Castello di Gradara, Piazza V Novembre, Gradara, PU, Italia

Description

Gradara Castle is a medieval fortress located on a hilltop 142m above sea level. From the keep, a 30m-tall tower, the view sweeps northwards to the Adriatic Sea and westwards to Mount Carpegna. The entire complex is protected by two circles of walls, the outermost is almost 800m long; in between the two circles is the village of Gradara, province of Pesaro and Urbino.

The view of the fortress and the old town is particularly picturesque, especially at night.

Due to its geographical location, Gradara has always been a strategic meeting point for traffic and people: during Medieval times, the fortress was one of the main locations of the conflicts between the militia loyal to the Papacy and the unruly families from the regions of the Marches and Romagna.

The fortress was the backdrop for the tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca included by Dante in his Divine Comedy.

The castle, now owned by the Italian State, has been managed by the Museum Authorities of the Marches since December 2014.
