Built in the 1500s, the Monastery of St. Mary of Stignano is situated on the ancient Via Francigena del Sud, towards Monte Sant’Angelo. It has been an appreciated rest stop for pilgrims headed to the Cave of Michael Archangel for years. Legend recounts that work on the complex was started in 1231 by the priests of Castel Pagano who built a primitive chapel on the spot where a blind beggar told them that he had regained his sight.
Initially managed by Franciscan monks, the monastery was finished in the 1600s with the construction of the church and bell tower and the resurfacing of the characteristic reddish limestone façade. It was a major Marian sanctuary until the 1800s.
The simple interior contains many works of art including the church’s marvellous 16th century loggia with a painting cycle on the life of St. Francis.
