The town of Gravina di Puglia extends along the edge of a gorge and features a large nucleus of rock dwellings which is connected to a dense system of underground hypogea in the neighbourhoods of Piaggio and Fondovico. Despite the various changes that the underground cavities in the residential area have undergone, being used as cellars or stables, the vast cave system in the gorge still conserves important evidence of a complex troglodyte civilization. Signs of the past are the numerous multi-storey troglodyte dwellings, spread out on overlapping levels and connected by external staircases, the dozens of frescoed churches, roads, tombs, walls and gardens.
