Encircled by medieval walls and embellished with small squares and stone staircases, the hilltop borgo of Vallerano (VT) stands on the Southern side of the Monti Cimini range. Numerous artefacts discovered in the Poggio Castello area date the settlement’s origins to the Bronze Age.
The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Ruscello, built in the 17th century, is one of the most interesting in the area and conserves Madonna Assunta in Cielo by Giovanni Lanfranco and Estasi di San Carlo Borromeo by Il Pomarancio. Just outside Vallerano, the Church of the Crucifix is an architectural jewel that houses an ancient crucifix and is the site of an important annual pilgrimage. The historical centre features the Church of St. Andrew built in 1512, the Romanesque style Church of St. Victor Maurus with a coffered ceiling and the 12th century Church of Maria Santissima della Pieve which conserves traces of wall paintings inside.
