In 1667, Pope Alexander VII commissioned Francesco Borromini to design the Biblioteca Universitaria Alessandrina as the library for the Studium Urbis in Rome to be housed in the building that culminates in the Church of Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza. In 1935, the University of Rome was transferred from the ancient Palazzo della Sapienza, in Corso Rinascimento, to the new Città Universitaria where the library was positioned behind the Rectorate. The library has been an institution of the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali e per il Turismo (Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism), since 1975 and is coordinated by the Direzione Generale per gli Archivi e le Biblioteche.
