The medieval borgo of Bettona (PG) coincides with the sites of the previous Etruscan-Roman city and is entirely encircled by medieval protective walls which incorporate sections of the previous Etruscan defences. The historic centre features the 13th century Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, later adapted during the 17th century, which conserves an apse frescoed by the Futurist Gerardo Dottori in 1939 and was the source of many works now displayed in the Museo della Città (City Museum). The central Piazza Cavour, site of the ancient forum, holds Palazzo del Podestà (1371), today the Museo della Città which also occupies several parts of Palazzo Biancalana, an 18th century Neoclassical building. Notable works in the gallery include: Saint Anthony of Padua and the Madonna della Misericordia with saints Steven, James and donors by Pietro Vannucci known as “Il Perugino” and a tin-glazed terracotta St. Anthony that shows the influence of the Della Robbia school. The nearby hamlet of Colle conserves an Etruscan hypogeum (late 3rd-early 2nd century BCE) whose spectacular grave goods are displayed in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale (National Archaeological Museum) in Perugia. On the downwards route to the hamlet of Passaggio di Bettona stands the Torre del Molinaccio (13th century) which was built as a lookout tower during the wars against Perugia. The plain below features the Villa del Boccaglione, a grand 18th century country estate designed by the architect Piermarini, and the complex of the Badia di San Crispolto al Piano, built prior to 1000 C.E. on the site of a Roman building.
