The Medieval hamlet of Collazzone (PG) has retained the essential characteristics of Lombard military architecture: town walls, rammed-earth embankments, intact keeps, and narrow streets.
Rising atop one of the castle keeps, the 18th century bell tower of the Church of St. Lawrence still dominates behind the apse of the new church built to replace the ancient parish building in 1671. The Church of St. Michael Archangel and the Palazzo Comunale, whose portal is attributed to Vignola, are also if interest. Not far from the castle, the nearby Convent of St. Lawrence – Benedictine from 1227, Franciscan from 1236 – has a massive main building in brick, and a church. The convent is believed to be of Romanesque origin and confirmation of this can be found in the underground crypt where, tradition holds, Jacopone da Todi died on Christmas night 1306.
The castle walls offer a panoramic view of the stunning landscape of the Tiber River Valley from Perugia to Todi, and typical Umbrian countryside, featuring woods interspersed with fields cultivated in the same way as they would have been centuries ago.
