Located in the north-eastern Umbria, Valfabbrica (PG) is a small town of medieval origin that is located in the valley of the river Chiascio. During the Middle Ages the territory was contended for a long time between the cities of Perugia, Assisi and Gubbio. In the 16th century it it became a domain of the Church, under whose government it remained until the constitution of the Kingdom of Italy (1860).
The old town center features the ancient medieval castle with beautiful 13th-century walls and a mighty torrione (tower) and, inside, the Church of San Sebastiano, once an oratory; outside the castle is the little Church of Madonna di Foce, built between 1634 and 1636, with a large terracotta rose window. The three access gates are worth mention: Porta Perugina, Porta Eugubina and Porta del Giglio lead to the residential area made of alleys, ancient buildings in stone and narrow tunnels. Near the cemetery, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta is what remains of the ancient Benedictine Monastery of Santa Maria in Vado Fabricae, now widely remodeled.
