The Luigi Mercantini Theatre was named after a Renaissance poet from Ripatransone. The building can seat approximately 250 people and occupies both the first and second floors of Palazzo del Podestà (otherwise known as Palazzo degli Anziani), whose main façade, with its Gothic features, stands out visually from the surrounding buildings.
The two side wings were built in the late 19th century by engineer Pietro Dasti. The hall was probably designed in a U shape to meet demands for space: neoclassical architect Pietro Maggi was conditioned by the pre-existing walls of the ancient palace in which the theatre was built. It was decorated in 1875 by Giovanni Micca and enriched by a historical backdrop designed by artist Ruffini di Falerone.
The splendid flat ceiling, with its harmonious colours, is decorated with a series of medallions, six of which bear the faces of Rossini, Verdi, Bellini, Metastasio, Goldoni and Alfieri.
