Designed as the site for the Esposizione Universale Romana of 1942 which never took place because of the outbreak of WWII, EUR was built following the canons of Rationalist architecture and abundantly decorated with symbols of the Fascist regime during urban expansion towards the coast.
There are many buildings that characterise the Rationalist approach: Palazzo delle Civiltà Italiana (also known as the Square Colosseum) with its repeating arches; Palazzo dei Congressi; the Marconi obelisk; the State Archive; and the buildings that house the Museo delle Civiltà which include the Museo Nazionale Preistorico Etnografico Luigi Pigorini, Museo Nazionale delle Arti e Tradizioni Popolari Lamberto Loria, Museo Nazionale dell'Alto Medioevo Alessandra Vaccaro and Museo Nazionale d'Arte Orientale Giuseppe Tucci. In addition: the planetarium, with the Museum of Astronomy, opened in 2004; the buildings that house state financial institutions INAIL and INPS; Piazza delle Forze Armate and its buildings; the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul; the so-called “Fungo” (mushroom), a water tank with a panoramic restaurant on the tower’s summit; and the Nuvola Convention Center designed by Fuksas.
EUR is today a residential neighbourhood with some public and private offices, distinguished by its areas of green which include an artificial lake and the Japanese walkway that surrounds it.
