Since the mid XIX century Stresa (VB) has been a major international tourist destination. In a panoramic position facing the Borromean Islands. Overlooking Lake Maggiore, Stresa is characterised by elegant noble villas and luxury art deco hotels with gardens. The noble residences include the 19th century Villa Pallavicino with its English garden and zoo. The city’s Palazzo dei Congressi is used for international conferences and the famous music festival "Stresa Festival – Settimane Musicali di Stresa e del Lago Maggiore". The Catholic spiritual philosopher Antonio Rosmini (1797-1855) who founded the Istituto della Carità, the seed for the Rosminians, in Domodossola died in 1828 at Villa Ducale.
