Mondovì is one of the “seven sisters” – Cuneo, Bra, Alba, Savigliano, Fossano and Saluzzo – in the province of Cuneo. Its varied terrain encompasses mountains, hills and plains, conformations that have influenced the urban composition of the town which is spread out over various levels linked by a cable car.
On the hill of Monte Regale with a view over the Langhe, rione Piazza was the original nucleus. Enclosed by medieval walls, the ancient neighbourhood features buildings of varying age and style including: 18th century Cathedral of St. Donato; 17th century Church of St. Francesco Saverio; Gothic Torre Civica del Belvedere (also known as the Torre dei Bressani); the Governor’s Palace and medieval Palazzo Fauzone.
The neighbourhood of Breo which developed in the foothills on the banks of River Ellero is the commercial and administrative heart of the town, including ancient Contrà Granda and Contrà Longa. The fulcrum is the central piazza San Pietro and the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, followed by: the chapels of St. Roch and the Madonna delle Grazie; torre di Piazza Gherbiana and the “Goj d’esse a Mondvì” Fountain (“the joy of being in Mondovì”). Rione Carassone features the 14th century Chapel of Santa Maria delle Vigne.
