The town of Tortona (AL) is located on the right bank of the river Scrivia, between the plain of Marengo and the hills of the Ligurian Apennines. Of Ligurian foundation, it was an important crossing place for important consular roads in Roman times, known as Dertona Julia.
The central thoroughfare of Tortona is via Emilia, part of the Roman consular road. Off it is piazza Aristide Arzano, with the 15th century Palazzo Guidobono, which houses the Museo Archeologico di Tortona.
Colle Cavo is the setting for Parco del Voltone, which takes its name from the central tower, the only surviving ruin of the 18th century Savoy fort of San Vittorio, demolished by Napoleone Bonaparte in 1801.
The 17th century Cathedral of Tortona, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, has a neoclassical façade designed by architect Nicolò Bruno. It conserves works by Gian Mauro della Rovere also known as il Fiammenghino, Aurelio Luini, Guglielmo Caccia also known as il Moncalvo, Camillo Procaccini and Giuseppe Vermiglio.
