Savigliano is one of the largest centres on the plains of Cuneo with about 200,000 inhabitants. The heart of the city is medieval piazza Santa Rosa, an irregularly shaped pedestrian area encircled by cloisters. In the south western corner of the square is 13th century Palazzo Miretti, also known as the ancient town hall. The red brick façade features large arches and windows at regular intervals. The square also holds the 13th century civic tower, again in red brick with a terrace half way up, a clock and a white lantern on top. The square is linked to via Sant’Andrea by the arch of Triumph (10m high, 5m wide) built in 1585 for a visit by Charles Emanuel I of Savoy.
The Church of St. Peter stands in piazza Molineri conserving precious canvases, sculptures, frescoes and a prestigious altar panel. Near the church is the Convent of Santa Monica, today the seat of the University of Turin, which has an inner courtyard with cloister on all four sides.
Savigliano has many other places of interest, including the teatro civico Milanollo, train museum, elegant Palazzo Taffini d’Acceglio, Civic Museum and Gipsoteca Calandra.
