L’Age d’or, a French-Italian co-production and debut feature from Bérenger Thouin, is a gripping ride with the overtones of a feuilleton. It reveals the full visual power of archive footage, used as the context for the live actors, while telling the adventurous story of anti-hero Jeanne, and her friend Celeste. True daughters of their time, they navigate the first half of the 20th century with all its cataclysms, tossed by history and contemporary passions, as if in a long, headlong flight, hurtling inexorably to a downfall.
The film was shot in France and Piedmont: in the centre and surroundings of Turin, and several municipalities—Agliè, Collegno, Savigliano (thanks to the assistance of the regional FCTP network).
Locations in Turin included: Teatro and Palazzo Carignano, Museo del Risorgimento, Dora Docks, San Giuseppe Institute, Circolo Canottieri Armida, Church of Borgo Cornalese, Leumann Village, Certosa di Collegno, Provana Castle in Collegno, Ducal Castle of Aglié, Virle Castle, Railway Museum of Savigliano.

1944. Guarded by soldiers, Countess Jeanne de Barante is headed for her execution. On the journey, Jeanne reflects on her life and the capricious destiny that led her to this fate: her childhood in her parents' butcher shop in the French provinces in the early 1900s, the years spent alone and destitute in Paris, her encounter with the intrepid, elusive and passionate Celeste, the turmoil of the Great War; her reunion with young Count Guillaume de Barante, who is aware of her youthful mistakes, their adventure in Brazil, during the coffee fever era of the Roaring Twenties, and her return to France, when Jeanne’s dream of returning to her home village as a countess comes true.
