Mosquitoes by Valentina and Nicole Bertan is a coming-of-age story that shatters preconceptions about identity, including sexual identity, and focusses on anger, rebellion, and the desire for redemption. Set in 1997, it tells the story of eight-year-old, gap-toothed Linda, her very rich grandmother, and her beautiful, dangerous, disruptive mother. Her encounter with sisters Azzurra and Marta will teach her how to become a girl.
The film was shot from June to July 2024 on location in central and northern Italy and in Switzerland, for a total of 7 weeks with a crew of 47 professionals.
There were seven weeks of preparation in Piedmont, in addition to three weeks of filming in Turin. Locations in the city (mostly interiors) included the Monte Bianco apartment building on Via Servais, a house in the foothills, and the Pinna Pintor clinic. Locations in Ivrea included: Palazzo Giusiana and its gardens on Corso Botta, and the former La Serra hotel, the last building in the Olivetti utopia, commissioned for the company from architects Igino Cappai and Pietro Mainardis and built in the late 1960s/ early 1970s.
Emilia-Romagna also provided locations: the historic centre and peripheral areas of Ferrara, where the film is set; Castel Bolognese, and the hamlet of Barbiano di Cotignola, near Ravenna. As did Veneto, Verona (in Via Volta, Biondella, a hilltop neighbourhood) and Lombardy, Milan.
Shooting locations in Switzerland included various towns in the Canton of Ticino, such as Mendrisio, Chiasso, Balerna, Airolo, and Riva San Vitale, with a panoramic scene overlooking the hairpin bends of the Gotthard Pass.
