The background to the stories of the Compagnia del Cigno is Milan, in all its multi-faceted glory, from the famous historical locations to the new skyline of the metropolitan city. The heart of the story is, of course, the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory. The kids meet and dispute in the building’s inner courtyard, with its arched colonnade, and in the driveway of Via Conservatorio outside the Church of Santa Maria della Passione, while the auditorium, setting for concerts and rehearsals, was created in a theatre in Rome.
The kid’s lives intersect with their neighbourhoods: Matteo has recently moved from Amatrice to share his uncle’s balcony flat in Via Paolo Sarpi; Barbara lives with her wealthy family in an elegant building in Piazza Eleonora Duse; Domenico and his father live in the suburbs of Crescenzago; the others, and their teacher, lives around central areas like Via San Marco, close to the Arco della Pace and Piazza Leonardo Da Vinci.
The famous historical settings of Milan are clearly featured in the shots: from the iconic Piazza Duomo to Castello Sforzesco, Parco Sempione, Basilica di San Lorenzo, Church of St. Mark and the Navigli. The modern locations of Piazza Gae Aulenti, the residential buildings of the “Vertical Forest” and Citylife in the Fiera di Milano neighbourhood are also seen.
Some scenes were shot in Como, where Irene goes to live after separating from Luca. The locations here include Piazza Duomo, Lungo Lario Trieste, Diga Foranea and the interiors of the Comune. Flashbacks of the terrifying earthquake experienced by Matteo and some of the final scenes show Amatrice and its natural resources.
