Milan, city of modernity and the future, with its recently-built skyscrapers and constantly changing skylines, was chosen as the setting for the Sky Original series, Il grande gioco.
The main location is the area of porta Nuova and its surroundings; the centro direzionale, the area that was developed around piazza Gae Aulenti, as a result of the rehabilitation project of the Garibaldi, Isola and Varesine neighbourhoods, the intersection of historical centre and financial district. The piazza is surrounded by buildings that include the Vertical Forest, an architectural structure with two towers covered with 2,000 varieties of fauna. The modern glass buildings that rise like enormous monoliths and reflect the old city around them, almost threatening to swallow it up, give an idea of the grandeur of an ambitious financial centre populated by thousands of workers.
Business men and women move through these settings; not only outdoors, also in elegant interiors, Hollywood-style villas, rooftops, terraces with breath-taking views and attics. This world continues outside of the Lombard capital in scenes with an international flavour shot in Montecarlo, Madrid, Paris and the costa Smeralda. The materials chosen for the interior sets – glass, marble, reflective surfaces, metal, precious wood – give the idea of the elegance, at times opulence, of the places where the characters interact. The ISG offices have a sober, elegant style created with wood, marble and glass.
Technology assisted in creating the crowds at the stadiums of San Siro and Varese: the actors were filmed in empty stadiums and VFX artists added the crowds in 3D, studying top soccer matches to ensure they interacted naturally with waving flags and anthems dedicated to the team in question.
