A symbol of Bologna and often used to host cultural events and concerts, piazza Santo Stefano is actually an extended area that starts in via Santo Stefano and leads to the Basilica of St. Stephen, also known as the complex of the “Seven Churches” because it brings together various buildings that were created in various time eras (of which only 4 remain today).
The square is surrounded by the porticoes of the noble palaces that overlook it, both Gothic and Renaissance in style: to the left is Casa Berti with frescoes by Gaetano Gandolfi, Palazzo Isolani and the 15th century Palazzo Bolognini Isolani; facing them, the 16th century Palazzo Bolognini Amorini Salina.
