Cuneo rises at the confluence of the Rivers Stura and Gesso on a wedge-shaped plateau surrounded by green landscape. The city has a chessboard layout that develops along a central axis which begins at the top of the imaginary wedge, piazza Torino, to extend along a long, middle road reaching the slopes of the surrounding valleys and mountains.
The historical centre, dating to the 12th century, is crossed by via Roma, an elegant road with porticoes that was recently restored to its ancient splendour, full of shops and caffes (some dating to the end of the 1800s). The principal monuments of the city can be found here: the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Wood, rebuilt in the 17th century on the foundations of the former Medieval church; the Baroque style Church of St. Ambrose; the 13th century Church of St. Francis; and the 18th century Church of the Holy Cross.
Cuneo continues along corso Nizza, with its high porticoes, which features the various architectural styles of the 1900s as it unfolds on its way out of the city. Uniting the two souls of the city is elegant piazza Galimberti, an area of almost 24,000m2, surrounded by ten neoclassical buildings with porticoes.
