A Trieste full of mysteries is the city that provides the backdrop to Libera, a Rai tv series in 8 episodes starring Lunetta Savino as an upright female magistrate who joins forces with a small-time criminal (Matteo Martari) on a secret investigation. It all begins when she picks up the traces of the man she believes is guilty of her daughter Bianca’s murder, fifteen years earlier. She decides to lead a double life careful not to raise the suspicions of colleagues, relatives and her beloved granddaughter.
The story features the wealthy area of the city: the Palazzo di Giustizia where Libera Orlandi works is central and also, inevitably, piazza Unità d'Italia, a location dear to every production wanting, as in this case, to make the city central to the story. "Trieste combines many aspects in one city”, commented the director Gianluca Mazzella, “it is an elegant city, very clean and tidy, but also has some grey areas. We filmed in institutional places, such as the Court of Trieste, who gave us permission, and in the suburbs, without forgetting the sea". The production filmed in the labyrinthine harbour area and the Yacht Club; in elegant streets and popular neighbourhoods such as "the quadrilateral of Melara" referred to in the series as the “hive” where Libera goes to find Pietro. The municipalities of Muggia and Duino Aurisina also provided locations. Some scenes had as their backdrop Ljubljana, the Slovenian city just across the border.
