The city of Trieste is the backdrop to Un anno di scuola, Laura Samani's second work, a coming-of-age story that interweaves personal memories, reflections on identity, and a look at the recent past, with a focus on generational change. The film is rooted in the director's personal memory and loosely based on Giani Stuparich's book of the same title, first published in 1929. The book is set at the Dante High School in Trieste, where Samani was a pupil in the early 2000s. "I read it for the first time at those very desks – she says – when I was the same age as the characters".
Filming took place for approximately six weeks (September, 30 - November 9, 2024) and employed approximately twenty regional workers across various departments. The city of Trieste and its surroundings are explored almost as a presence that acts as a counterpoint to the lives of the adolescents depicted in the film. The main location was the I.S.I.S. Nautico "Tomaso di Savoia Duca di Genova – L. Galvani” in via delle Campanelle. Other locations included: i Topolini in Barcola (semi-circular terraces lining the shore), the Ausonia beach resort, streets in the city centre, the Trattoria La Grotta in Roiano, Stoka in Contovello, Burlo Garofolo Maternal and Infant Hospital, Casa di spedizioni Francesco Parisi, Basovizza, and Muggia.
Produced by Nadia Trevisan and Alberto Fasulo for Nefertiti Film with Rai Cinema, and co-produced by Thomas Lambert for Tomsa Films with ARTE Cinema France, the film is the story of a Swedish girl, Fred, who arrives in town for her final year of high school. The only girl in a class of boys, she captures everyone's attention, especially that of three friends: charming and reserved Antero; histrionic seducer Pasini; and good-natured, sarcastic Mitis. Fred's arrival puts their friendship to the test. While each of the boys secretly desires her for himself, Fred longs to be part of the group, but is continually asked to sacrifice something of herself to become one of them.
The production had the organizational support and contribution of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Commission-PromoTurismoFVG and the support of Eurimages, MIC – Directorate-General for Cinema and Audiovisual, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Audiovisual Fund, CNC, Île-de-France, and Creative Europe Media.
