From Stanghe, the main hamlet in the Ratschings Valley (Val di Racines), not too far from Sterzing, one can follow the path winding alongside the river to reach a very unusual and impressive gorge known as Gilfenklamm. Along its course, the river gives way to raging rapids that have carved their way through the rocky gorge. In the middle of the gorge, breathtaking views open up to the depths below and a walking route with bridges and stairs leads visitors through this spectacular natural setting. Marble is still extracted in Ratschings Valley, and these falls have also dug their course through the relatively soft marble, reaching a depth of 15 m. In some areas, the stone ranges from light-colored to white with swirls of green. Gilfenklamm is also Europe’s only gorge carved out of marble.
