After outgrowing its old structure in the dense village centre, Magrè (Margreid) found an ingenious solution in 2010: it dug its new fire station into the mountain.
Three tunnels, parallel to each other and a few metres apart, were carved into the mountain. Two of them are used as garages for fire trucks; the third tunnel houses to the command centre, training facilities, sleeping area, and locker rooms. Narrow crossover tunnels connect the main caverns with each other.
The concept, which is space saving yet perfect in form, could set a precedent in the Alps, where building space is very limited. The futuristic-looking cavern at the foot of the vertical rock face is, incidentally, a one-of-a-kind film location.
