The village of Silvana Mansio, at 1,470m above sea level, is a hamlet of Serra Pedace (province of Cosenza), set harmoniously in the Sila Grande subrange in the Sila National Park. Halfway between Camigliatello and Lorica, it is set in a wooded area of approx. 100,000 sqm, whose natural habitat has been unaffected by the buildings are they are mostly wood cabins.
During Roman times, Silvana Mansio was a waypoint on the ancient “army road” which was used by soldiers to cross the Sila plateau from the gulf of Sibari on the Ionian coast to the gulf of Sant'Eufemia on the Tyrrhenian side.
The settlement became a village in the 1930s when Alessandro Vanotti, a businessman from Lombardy, came to Sila to work on the Calabria-Lucania railroad and stayed. The little mountain church, with its pitched roof, is dedicated to St. Alexander in his honour.
