Palazzo del Capitano looks onto the Eastern side of piazza del Popolo in Todi (PG). Built at the end of the 13th century to host themeetings of the Council, it was the second civic building to be erected on the square and therefore is also called Palazzo Nuovo to distinguish it from the older Palazzo del Popolo. The facade is notable for the great harmony of Gothic style decorative elements. Two large round arches on the ground floor open onto the so-called "voltoni", which were accessible through 4 corner doors until the 16th century. Three Gothic windows on the first floor illuminate the large room and stand out for their elegance. The building was originally used as the Captain's courtroom and has remnants of 14th century frescoes. In the highest part of the palace, four triple lancet windows surmounted by round arches open onto the rooms of the Museo civico Pinacoteca, housed on the top floor of both the Palazzo del Capitano and the Palazzo del Popolo, joined by a 17th century overpass.
