Symbol of the medieval past of Fossato di Vico (PG), the Rughe is a covered street with round stone vaults, supported by strong pointed or round arches. Light comes through the embrasures which in the Middle Ages were also used for defence from external attacks.
A rare example of 13th-century architecture created to defend the castle, it also solved the problems of moving the inner perimeter of the west wall, from where, beneath the crenellated tower, the portam castri, the main entrance to the castle, opens.
