In 1934, the Fascist rulers decide to build Bolzano’s industrial district.
For ten years, new companies pay no taxes nor tariffs. The state subsidies are enticing; electricity is practically given away to companies. Thousands of workers are lured to Bolzano out of northern Italy. A few years after the decision to industrialise the area, there are already 39 companies employing more than 8,000 workers. Today, there is hardly any big industry around. However, many buildings are still standing—including huge plants. The former aluminium factory is particularly noteworthy.
