A hill near the municipality of Bondo (Trento) has been the site of a massive Austro-Hungarian cemetery since 1916, preserving the graves of about 700 Habsburg soldiers who fell during WWI. Designed by Colonel Theodor Spiegel who was stationed in Bondo at the time, it is located in the Giudicarie Valleys between the Chiese and Sarca rivers.
Built in granite and white marble, the complex features an imposing staircase that leads to the actual cemetery. The gravestones of the fallen soldiers are marked by black crosses on which names are engraved, with the exception of around 30 unknown bodies. The area also features funerary sculptures including one dedicated to colonel Spiegel and a fountain depicting a drinking deer.
The entire structure is surrounded by an evocative conifer forest, planted when the cemetery was built.
